Founded in 1958 as the Nautical School of Panama, it exclusively trained polyvalent sailors until 1971. In 1972, the focus expanded to include careers for Deck and Engine Officers, meeting the demand for International Merchant Marine Officers. The UMIP specializes in training seafarers for maritime, coastal, and merchant fleet roles, emphasizing life skills, leadership, discipline, responsibility, and values.
